Hello, we are Team Alpha (Naïs, Morgane, Mathias and Amaury) and we are going to talk to you about Saint-Amant-Roche-Savine and about the logo that we have created for this “commune”.
A good logo must be simple because it needs to be understood quickly. When we look at a logo, we should immediately think of the thing(s) it represents; a logo is like an identity card. We needed to include elements in our logo that represent Saint-Amant-Roche-Savine.
First, some information about the commune. There were 2,500 inhabitants in the 19th century (it was overpopulated!); today, there are only 500 (one could say it is underpopulated). It is a commune (village plus surrounding land) within the Livradois-Forez regional Nature park in the Auvergne (Massif Central). Its citizens are commited to fighting global warming (there are posters on several of the walls of the village showing cartoon penguins, victims, like us, of global warming). The inhabitants of this town are generous and welcoming to strangers. The number of council houses is higher than average.
The municipal budget is small, so creating a logo (which costs a lot) is not a priority. Nevertheless, having an efficient logo can be a good means to promote the commune (to tourists). It also gives the inhabitants a sense of identity. Most municipalities today have a logo; it is therefore important for Saint-Amant-Roche-Savine to have its own logo too.
By organizing a public competition for the creation of its logo, the municipality wishes to promote local talent (and reduce the costs involved in designing a logo!). The competition is also a means to stimulate interest in the heritage and culture of the town.
Our logo needs to represent the commune. There is a traditional house, symbol of safety and continuity. The tree represents the forest which covers most of the area. The volcano is a reference to the fact that the commune is in a volcanic region and a Nature parc. You can also see a penguin in the volcano to reference the eco-friendly attitude of the inhabitants. The tree and the colour green also emphasise the citizens’ commitment to fighting global warming. At the top, there is a set of little people of different colors to represent the multiculture village, solidarity and generosity. The volcano is on a curved line symbolising the Earth, time passing and economic growth.
According to us, a logo should be a symbol, drawing or writing that is easy to understand, it shouldn’t be too hard to draw, it must be descriptive and it must have a catchy motto which makes the logo more comprehensive. So our logo is an open gate which is pretty easy to understand using our motto which is: “Ici, vous êtez chez vous!” which means that even if you are rich or poor you are welcome to come and settle in this village or simply visit. We made our logo in neutral black; in this town you won’t be judged. Therefore our logo is easy to understand though a little hard to reproduce. The difference between a personal logo and a logo for an organization is: a personal logo should represent the person who makes it and be understood by few people; a logo for an organization should represent a group of people like a firm, and needs to be understood by many. Saint-Amant-Roche-Savine needs a logo to attract tourists to boost its economy and also to attract new families (because the population is aging). Saint-Amant doesn’t yet have a logo because the community probably never felt the need for it. We think that the town council asked the general public to design the logo to have many ideas for logos, and also to see how the commune is seen by outsiders. We think that our logo represents Saint-Amant quite well because it evokes the welcoming attitude of the inhabitants; they will not judge you according to your purchasing power. Thanks to our logo, people will say to themselves that Saint-Amant is very welcoming and that they should move there or at least visit it. Our logo should help increase the number of inhabitants (the main problem of Saint-Amant is the lack of inhabitants) and also boost its main economic activity which is tourism in the next ten years or so.
Our logo (with the brownish dragon!), by Manon, Maiwen, Laure, Emma and Tiphaine. We are going to present to you the work we did on St-Amant-Roche-Savine’s new logo. We think a logo is a good idea for the commune to develop its image at a regional scale and unite its population. It is also a way to be known and recongnizable easily. For us, a logo must be original but clear, with a few eloquent elements. We brainstormed what we wanted to feature on our logo, we started with something really basic featuring trees, but it evolved a lot as our knowledge about the commune grew. Now we are going to explain each element of the logo. The dragon is not the first element on which we focused. But in the process of creation, it appeared as an important component. We chose to represent a kind dragon, as a symbol of the strengh and the dynamism of the village. This mythic animal referes to the festival that takes place in Saint-Amant-Roche-Savine each year : the "Fete Patromale" since 2001. This is a symbol of the village. The dragon is surrounding all the others components and creating a unity and a movement at the same time. Despite the smallness of the village, lots of events are created and show the vitality. Furthermore the dragon spits fire that contains the name of the village written in a thick font. And this name gets out the logo because we take on board that Saint-Amant- Roche-Savine could become a model in the voluntary work and spread its energy out of its borders ! Red represents the local festival’s colour. Red also refers to the communist party color, but we chose a deep red so it’s not too politcial. It’s also better to have a deep red to be printed in black and white, and we found that more beautiful esthetically. The green star represents the PNR’s star, in fact it's the same colour, clear green because we wanted to keep it as it was on the PNR’s logo. The last but not the least : the village is in white to be showed as discrete but still present and important, protected by the dragon, like a treasure. We have decided to represent the village of St-Amant-Roche-Savine on our logo because for us, the commune is not defined only by the nature and we think that the built environment is an important element of the village. We know that there are some beautiful houses in the center of the village and the church is a listed building (historical monument). We thought that residents might be proud of that and that they would be happy to this see this on their logo. But we didn’t want it to be the main element of the logo because we didn’t want put a religious symbol forward. That’s why the shape of the village is under the dragon and it’s for the logo stay original. We chose to use the star of PNR of Livradois Forez to represent the environnement of this commune. This star on the top can watch the dragon and city. It is important to show it to understand the environment in which St-Amant-Roche-Savine is included. The PNR is important because it is the symbolic of nature, of her preservation and accentuate the value of the biological diversity. Though we weren’t sure if we were legally allowed to use this specific star on our logo, we chose to do it anyway, considering that St-Amant-Roche-Savine is part of the PNR so it can also use the visual identity of the park. We think it’s important to show it to understand this diversified territory. To conclude, we chose quite a daring logo because for us it reflects what kind of commune St-Amant-Roche-Savine is, and what it could become. We think St-Amant-Roche-Savine could become kind of a "laboratory" and welcome young people with local, social, and environmentally friendly projects. The commune is probably going to remain small but we hope for the arrival of a few families, and a diversity of new people to perpetuate and grow the commune’s dynamism.
